Our History

Our roots in the community started many years ago and although we remember the past, we look forward to the future and all its promise. It was a dream fulfilled when seven local business owners and educators recognized an opportunity for the presence of a new funeral home in Terrebonne Parish. Community Funeral Home was built upon integrity, professionalism and affection in June of 1971 by founders Donald Verrett, Rev. Wilbert Danks, Clarence Brown, Leontine Robinson, Rosa Lee Washington, Lloyd Poindexter and Lanard Robinet. They held their dedication and open house ceremony to their new location at 205 S. Hollywood Rd., Houma, Louisiana on June 4, 1972. They wanted Community Funeral Home to be a “symbol of dedicated quality service and steadfast concern for any man, woman, boy or girl whom they served.” A symbol that life is chance for uniting people of all cultures, races and religious beliefs.
For 43 years families of all races extending beyond the Tri-parish region have come to appreciate the independent service that can be customized to individual needs. In 2002, we moved to our current location at 230 S. Hollywood Rd., Houma, Louisiana. We are operated by board of directors, James Matthews, Geraldine Jones, Millie Verdin, Reginald Verrett and Irma Brown.
In 2009, we were named Business of the Year by the NAACP and we are known for supporting The American Cancer Society with Relay for Life. We believe that education is the key to success and we support our local churches and organizations with back to school supplies, sponsor students for Close-Up trips to Washington, D.C., youth basketball and cheerleading camps across the United States. We are active in the community during Thanksgiving and Christmas by donating food baskets to families and bicycles to children that have lost a parent due to domestic violence.
It is the mission of the board of directors and the staff of Community Funeral Home to assist in the recognition of the value of life lived and to create meaningful ways for the family and community to celebrate the memory of their loved one.
From 1971 until the present, it has been our vision to care for each family with the same respect and dignity we would have offered to our own family in their time of need. WE are committed to serving the needs of each family in a way that ensures even the most minute details are given due consideration.
We appreciate the families of this community for supporting us for over 43 years. We want you to know that you can always depend on us for a high degree of dignity and care for your loved ones because we CARE about you and we are a part of the community.
